Flowers are an exceptionally important part of most weddings as they can add an air of opulence to the day. When deciding on flowers for your wedding day it is best to look at what is seasonally available to ensure the most beautiful blooms and to avoid being disappointed. Today we are focusing on some of our favourite flowers available throughout summer to help you decide which flowers suit your wedding and season best.

Peony

First and foremost is the peony. Peonies have become exceptionally popular and demanded over recent years thanks to their full bulbs and ruffled petals and are especially popular among brides wanting to create a vintage theme. Available in white, hues of pinks and deep red peonies are a beautiful option for many. For a gorgeous statement, use peonies in your centrepiece and bouquet.

Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are made up of many small flowers which create a beautiful full bloom. They not only come in beautiful pastels but gorgeous vibrant tones too. Hydrangeas are the perfect option for larger floral arrangements.

Dahlia

Dahlias are a lovely large bloom with lush petals. They come in a beautiful range of colours including white, yellow, orange, red and pink and are the perfect flower to add to your bouquet and centrepieces. Due to their size, dahlias are a great alternative to peonies if you are after a more affordable flower option.

Sweet Pea

Sweet Peas are a smaller, more delicate flower option with a lovely fragrance. Available in shades of white, pink, and purple, Sweet Peas look lovely and romantic arranged on their own but are also beautiful with other summer blooms.

Calla Lily

Calla Lillies are a popular flower choice among brides for its gorgeous elegant shape and large variety of colours. Available in lavender, yellow, orange, dark maroon and many more shades, there is a colour to suit all wedding themes. Calla Lillies are perfect for a more unique bouquet. For summer weddings, bouquets full of mixed blooms create a beautiful and fresh look.

#FridayFlorals: Real Wedding Florals

For today's #FridayFlorals post, we thought we'd share some images from a wedding we did earlier this year for Lauren and Bart. We designed the ceremony arch which was created in conjunction with Blush Floral Stylists and La Lumiere (draping).

This wedding was a full service wedding including all styling, planning and day of coordination - our favourite package. We love full service weddings because we really get to be a part of the journey, keeping the brides from becoming too embroiled in the unimportant details or family squabbles over seating and really just watch them enjoy the process and relax and really immerse themselves in their big day.

For this wedding, the flowers were done by Blush Floral Stylists who imported all the Colombian roses which really stole the show in the arrangements!

#FridayFlorals: Flower Crowns

Flower Crowns are the epitome of elegance for your relaxed wedding day attire. Particularly appropriate for summer or island weddings, the flower crown is inexpensive, striking and can be tailored to exactly suit your wedding theme or 'feel'. If your wedding is over the top, brightly coloured and festive, a larger crown of peonies and roses could fit the bill while for a more reserved crown, draw inspiration from the Roman laurel wreath with greenery and delicate dustings of white with gypsophila for a resplendent crown to adorn your finished 'do.

Below we've compiled a few crowns to suit some of the various popular themes at the moment. It all comes down to personal taste and which style will best suit the feel of your day.

Remember that Harlow Garland's specialty florals department, HGBlooms can create these floral crown masterpieces especially for you, tailored to your signature style and taste with the greatest of ease. Talk to us today!

#FridayFlorals: Floral Wedding Gowns

For today's installment of #FridayFlorals, we thought we'd take a different tack and showcase floral wedding gowns, an alternative for the bride who isn't too keen on white or is planning an exquisite garden wedding.

Many bridal designers have been showcasing some truly stunning floral gowns this season inclusing the incredible Carolina Herrera with a focus on soft, pastel tones and soft, subtle watercolour prints.

Some have chosen a slightly different route and have incorporated your 'something blue' by opting for a chinoiserie style print either as the main focus or as an underlay on the skirt so you catch a glimpse as the bride walks the aisle.

The benefit of choosing a floral gown is that you'll not only stand out among a sea of white and have a truly unique gown but you'll also likely save a pretty penny considering you don't need to limit yourself to bridal collections.

Many eventwear stockists may have just what you need or alternatively, you can take a bridal pattern to a dressmaker to have your perfect gown crafted out of your chosen fabric - which will be dramatically less expensive than anything in the realm of bridal fabrics. You can also usually get away with calling it a 'ballgown' and not having the added 'bridal' markup added to your creation.

Floral gowns can still be paired with traditional veils so aren't a complete escape from the classic bride yet do allow you far more options in regards to accessories and bridesmaid attire.

Perfect for the unconventional bride!

Friday Florals: Impromptu Shoot

On Monday after a finishing up a styled shoot for NZ Bride and Groom Magazine, we still had these flowers left over and looking vibrant so we decided to do a bit of an impromptu styled shoot of a table set up to showcase these gorgeous blooms.

The central table arrangement was crafted with King Protea - white and pink, Paeonies (alternate spelling peony) in pink, Ruscus in red, dried Lavender and Sea Holly which is part of the Thistle family but a little more on the purple side. The amazing purple balls you see lying on a bed of evergreen are Allium and as well as looking so novel with their bright purple blossoms and spherical form, are actually part of the onion family (often referred to as 'flowering onion') and are entirely edible, best used chopped up into salads and such with a flavour like that of spring onion.

The favour boxes you see on the table in the glass box are custom made by Harlow Garland's bespoke department, Bespoke by HG which is coming soon!

Harlow Garland, as well as being New Zealand's premier wedding planners and stylists, are also curators of wedding floral decor through our specialist florals department, HGBlooms.

We love the way that flowers add such an air of opulence to any event and how just the mere addition of blooms can lift any venue to a higher standard.

We can create all manner of beautiful florals, from bouquets and hair crowns, boutonnieres and corsages, to floral installations, centrepieces and other floral decor.

Whatever your wish, we can create it.

We believe that flowers should be more accessible and thus we don't charge astronomical construction rates, we don't import any international blooms and only use what is in season and readily available at the time of your wedding or event, enabling us to create fresh, seasonal arrangements, lovingly hand-crafted by our own professional and highly-skilled stylists.

Every detail is considered and crafted to the highest quality standard to create your dream floral vision in the lushest, most beautiful blooms and accoutrements.
