Gatsby is a man who worked hard to create a certain persona for himself and once he'd met Daisy, that meant creating a persona and a facade of what she wanted so that he'd be good enough to win her affections. He's so infatuated with her that even the flashing light at the end of her dock makes him feel as if he's closer to her. When they finally reunite, Daisy is about to marry Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby decides it's time he came out of the shadows to make her fall for him again.
